CVEC Electric Service Update 5 PM
Lovingston, VA, March 4, 2009 Central Virginia Electric Cooperative is concluding power restoration efforts that began late Sunday evening following a significant snow storm. Heavy snow caused widespread outages in the eastern portion of the CVEC territory, including the counties of Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland and Fluvanna, with total outages affecting more than 4000 utility customers.
After initial damage assessments, the Cooperative had hoped to restore power prior to Tuesday morning, but deep snow limited accessibility to off-road trouble spots and the sheer number of smaller outages made for slow progress by the repair crews.
With the assistance of crews from Delaware Electric Cooperative, Craig-Botetourt Electric Cooperative and the City of Salem Electric Department, CVEC crews were able to get the lights back on for its members by Wednesday afternoon.
The Cooperative thanks its members for their assistance in reporting trouble spots and has asked members to share storm and weather related photos that will be posted on the utility website. The Cooperative has also posted an online survey to gauge Cooperative member opinion of CVEC’s performance during the outage restoration process.

CVEC Electric Service Update 3 PM
Lovingston, VA, March 3, 2009 The afternoon was slow going for the crews who are continuing to work in difficult conditions to respond to numerous outages. With the heavy snow, trees fell into powerlines creating fault locations and creating power outages for everyone beyond that point. Many of the fault locations are off road and in heavy snow where it is difficult to get a bucket truck or digger derrick.
Crews will continue working and late into the night and their efforts today have reduced the number of outages to around 1265 from the originial 4000. The real challenge has been the number of outages. In some instances, clearing a tree and repairing the damaged equipment will restore services to hundreds of people. In most cases during this effort, clearing a tree and repairing damaged equipment will restore service to 30-40 people.
Look for an update later this evening and expect to see ongoing results. It is too early to tell if the crews will be able to complete the restoration effort today. Unfortunatedly some may see a second day without service, but the majority of services should be restored.
Crews are working in all areas so it is difficult to predict the time that your service may be restored, but know that they are working as hard as possible to get the lights back on.
Look for an update around 6 PM and view the outage summary section and service territory page for additional details.

CVEC Electric Service Update 11 AM
Lovingston, VA, March 3, 2009 The crews are making good progress this morning, restoring service to about 700 people. There should be more progress to report in the early afternoon. The reported outage total is down to about 1900 as of this update. Please keep in mind that often there are fewer outages than are reported on the webpage, due to a delay between the actual service restoration and the updating of the outage management system.
A big thank you for the help that CVEC has received from other electric utilities. Linemen from Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative and the City of Salem Electric Department are working alongside CVEC linemen. Their assistance gives us an extra six crews and helps speed up the process of getting the lights back on. Take a moment to thank them and the CVEC linemen if you see them working in your area.
Look for an update around 1 PM today.

CVEC Electric Service Update 10 AM
Lovingston, VA, March 3, 2009 The number of outages rose to 2600 throughout the night but are now being reduced. The crews have clear weather and should have improved access to areas that were difficult to reach yesterday due to the heavy snowfall.
Progress has been made this morning and we are waiting to report the revised outage information as it is reported from the field to our outage management system. The figures reported on the 10 AM outage summary do not reflect most of the work done early this morning.
Check back for updated figures before noon.

CVEC Electric Service Update 3 PM
Lovingston, VA, March 2, 2009 The number of reported outages on the CVEC system is presently at 1991. Line crews have been working to restore power but progress is slow going with over a foot of snow on the ground in some areas, particularly in the eastern section of the service territory where most of the outages have occurred. (See the Outage Summary on the CVEC webpage for additional details.)
The snow limits or delays equipment access in many areas where there are trees on powerlines, broken poles and wire on the ground. While CVEC has been able to restore power in some areas, additional outages occurring throughout the day have kept the number of affected CVEC members close to 2000 in number.
CVEC crews will continue working late into the night, attempting to restore service for as many members as possible. However, the Cooperative anticipates that the restoration effort will extend into tomorrow before the power restoration effort can be completed.
Those members currently without electric service should make preparations in the event that their service is not restored this evening. If remaining in your home could present a health risk or cause undue discomfort, please contact friends, family members or the local authorities to discuss moving to another overnight location.

CVEC Electric Service Update 11 AM
Lovingston, VA, March 2, 2009 The number of reported outages on the CVEC system has risen to 2046. As line crews work to restore power, some additional outages have occurred due to falling trees.
There are several outage locations that affect 200-400 down line utility customers, including those served by the Columbia Metering Point where a loss of power from the regional transmission system has caused 445 Cooperative members to be without power. Crews are working to resolve these outages in the hope of restoring service to as many people as possible in the shortest period of time.
The remainder of the outages are scattered across locations served by 21 of the Central Virginia Electric Cooperative’s 31 substations. CVEC crews are also working on outages that affect smaller groups of people but the Cooperative advises that it will be a challenge to restore service for all members before nightfall given the present conditions. CVEC has requested assistance from adjoining utilities and crews will continue their repair work throughout the day and possibly into tomorrow.
CVEC asks that Cooperative members report outages by calling 800-367-2832 and using the automated outage reporting system. The outage management system will combine their data with outage data reported by other members, to help identify and to dispatch repair crews to the fault location.
CVEC will post outage information and restoration efforts early this afternoon on its website at www.forcvec.com.

The Columbia Metering point remains without service, affecting 445 utility customers. CVEC will let you know when the metering point receives power.
In the Pamplin substation area, a tree on a line has 480 members without electric service. Crews are working to resolve the cause of that outage.
There are scattered outages around the remainder of the eastern portion of the CVEC service territory affecting a total of 675 members. Crews from all locations are working at the fault locations from Appomattox to Louisa counties.
Look for additional updates as information becomes available.

Lovingston, VA, March 2, 2009 - 8 AM Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), reports that 4000 cooperative members are without power. Cumberland, Appomattox and Buckingham counties are the areas with the heaviest concentration of outages, numbering over 3200 affected homes and businesses in those areas.
The cause of the outages is due to a loss of power at the Columbia, Curdsville, Pamplin and Appomattox substation and metering points. CVEC receives power at those facilities from the regional transmission system. When power is restored to these affected substations, then service will be restored to many cooperative members and CVEC will address individual outages along the distribution lines.
