April 28, 2009 Update Clarification Regarding the 4.63% Rate Increase CVEC has received questions regarding the language cited from The Virginia State Corporation Commission Order where it said: "...the Commission allow its rates to increase by $2,314,643 or 4.63% on an annual basis..." Some readers interpreted the language to mean that the SCC had authorized CVEC to increase rates by 4.63% this year and in years after 2009. The actual intent of the language was to convey a change in rates where the average CVEC member would see a 4.63% increase in his or her yearly bill compared to bills from previous years. No additional rate increase will occur without a rate filing with the State Corporation Commission and notice to CVEC members. April 3, 2009 Update SCC Issues Order Approving New Central Virginia Electric Cooperative Rates The Virginia State Corporation Commission issued an Order on March 30, 2009 approving CVEC’s application for a streamlined increase in rates. In December, CVEC notified its members that it was seeking a modest rate change to cover rising costs. The Cooperative provided members with further information regarding the rate action in the most recent edition of the Current Communicator, the Cooperative’s member newsletter. CVEC also posted information on the Cooperative’s website, www.forcvec.com. The Virginia State Corporation Commission stated the following in its Order: IT IS THEREFORE FOUND that this application may be filed as a streamlined application and CVEC’s request that the Commission allow its rates to increase by $2,314,643 or 4.63% on an annual basis should be granted. The proposed rates should be put in place for service rendered on or after April 2, 2009. The complete SCC order can be seen on the website of the Virginia State Corporation Commission by searching for case PUE-2009-00013. Click on the link below: http://docket.scc.virginia.gov/vaprod/DOCUMENTS.ASP?MATTER_NO=126565 or a Members will see the new rates applied to the bills that they receive in the month of May 2009 and thereafter. Individual bills may increase by more or less than the 4.63% average based upon actual usage. A Message About the CVEC Rate Increase - January 29, 2009 Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC) sent a letter to the Cooperat In that letter, it was noted that the Cooperative has experienced increases in costs over the past several years. Higher prices for everything from metals to wood products to health care have pushed the cost of providing electric service above the present rates, which were originally approved in 2000. While CVEC has worked hard to keep rates low over the years, the Cooperative must now seek a rate adjustment to assure that it remains financially strong and that it will be able to continue to provide reliable electric service to its members. CVEC plans to file a streamlined rate case with the Virginia State Corporation Commission on March 2, 2009. To provide members with a thirty day notice, CVEC has placed a legal notice in the major newspapers in the region. Enclosed is a copy of that notice for your review. As you can see, the Cooperative was successful in keeping the rate increase below the target of 4.9% of total revenues. March Update: CVEC filed with the State Corporation Commission with an average rate increase of 4.63% and plans to implement the increase, effective April 1, 2009 |
